How Much Should Interior Painting Cost in 2026?
A fair 2026 price for professional interior painting is $2–6 per square foot of wall area, about $500–1,150 in labor for a standard 12×12 bedroom, and $5,200–7,800 for a 2,000 sq ft house — 2026 US figures from our calculator bands, verified 2026-10. Quotes inside those ranges are normal; quotes 30%+ outside them need a reason, and the reasons are knowable. Here's the range by size, and what legitimately moves it.
Quick answer: Interior painting should cost (2026 US, verified 2026-10): $2–6/sq ft of wall all-in professional; labor-only $1.5–3.5/sq ft when you buy the paint; $60–150 DIY materials for a standard bedroom; whole-house for a 2,000 sq ft home $5,200–7,800 professional or $440–810 DIY in materials. Coastal metros and heavy prep push the top of every band; small-town crews the bottom.
How much should interior painting cost per square foot?
Two honest bands, one trap. All-in professional: $2–6 per sq ft of wall. Labor-only (you buy paint): $1.5–3.5 per sq ft of wall. The trap: the '$2–6' figures you'll see quoted elsewhere are often per floor area — which is roughly half the wall number — so a '$4/sq ft' quote and our '$4/sq ft of wall' can differ by 2× while both are honest. Ask which square foot is being priced before comparing anything.
How much should a whole room cost?
For a standard bedroom, $500–1,150 in professional labor or $575–1,240 all-in (2026 US, verified 2026-10) — DIY materials run $60–150 depending on paint tier. The table scales it across common rooms; every row assumes two coats, standard prep, walls only.
| Room | Wall area | DIY materials | Pro labor-only | Pro all-in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small bedroom 10×10 | ~280 sq ft | $55–90 | $420–980 | $500–1,060 |
| Bedroom 12×12 | 331 sq ft | $65–110 | $500–1,150 | $575–1,240 |
| Primary bedroom 14×14 | ~400 sq ft | $80–140 | $600–1,400 | $680–1,520 |
| Living room 16×14×9 | ~530 sq ft | $105–180 | $800–1,850 | $900–2,050 |
How much should a whole house cost?
A 2,000 sq ft home carries roughly 2,600–3,300 sq ft of wall and should price at $5,200–7,800 professional (the figure whole-house quotes cluster around; full labor band $4,200–11,600) or $440–810 in DIY materials — 15–19 gallons. A 1,000 sq ft home runs about half that: $3,160–6,800 professional all-in across the band. Room count, ceiling height and color changes move it more than floor area does.
What makes a quote legitimately higher?
Four things push quotes above the band honestly: prep (patching, sanding, caulking can double the hours on damaged walls), height (ceilings above 9 ft and stairwells add 20–50%), color change (dark-to-light adds primer; reds and yellows often need three coats), and market (coastal metros run the top; small-town crews the bottom). Occupied rooms slow everything — emptier is cheaper. A quote above band with one of these reasons attached is fair; above band with no reason is a renegotiation.
How do you know if your quote is fair?
Rebuild it: does the gallon count match area × coats ÷ 350 (±1 can)? Does the rate sit inside $1.5–3.5/sq ft of wall for the described scope? Is prep itemized? Then compare against at least two more quotes asked the same three questions. Our interior painting cost calculator prints every line for your exact room, and the DIY vs pro calculator shows what the quote buys against your own hours.
What PaintCalcs doesn't do
- These ranges are our calculator's 2026 US bands — we don't have ZIP-level data, and we're not the cheapest number on the internet by construction.
- We don't produce formal quotes or connect you with painters.
- We don't call quotes 'scamming' for being above band — prep, height and market legitimately move the number, and the page says by how much.
- We don't sell paint or take referral fees; the bands are the same ones printed on our calculator pages.
